Building an ERA5-to-SCALE Workflow for Students

I created a student-friendly workflow to use ERA5 data with SCALE-RM, focusing on reliability, clarity, and reproducibility for realistic case studies.

Recently, I built and refined a practical workflow to help students use ERA5 data with SCALE-RM more confidently.

This effort started from a common gap: students can follow documentation step by step, but they still need a smooth path from “data request” to “ready-to-run experiment setup”. My goal was to make that path clearer, less error-prone, and easier to repeat across different test cases.

Instead of focusing on individual commands, I focused on the full user experience:

  • clear onboarding for first-time users,
  • consistent dataset preparation,
  • fewer manual pitfalls,
  • and a reusable structure students can adapt to their own projects.

Visual checks are useful for confirming that inputs look physically consistent before simulation.

I originally prepared this as a tutorial for students, and I plan to keep improving it as we test more cases and collect feedback.

If you are training newcomers in cloud-resolving modeling, I have found that investing in workflow design early saves significant time later.
